A small team from South Wales are heading off to Western Kenya in March 2008 to rewire the Ulamba orphanage.
The orphanage is supported by Moving Mountains Trust and hosts the summer Africamp trips. The area doesn’t have mains electricity but occasionally a generator supplies power to the orphanage and clinic buildings on site. During the summer of 2007 it was noticed that the majority of the cabling already in place was using speaker wire and was prone to catching fire whenever large items were plugged in. The project in March will be to replace the speaker wire with appropriate insulation cable and include proper sockets, fittings and fuse box. The aim is to fully install an electrical system in the buildings that will work from the generator but also be suitable for when the mains does finally reach the area. A solar system is also half installed and will be upgraded to run in parallel.
The work is being undertaken by a very kind electrician from Caerleon (Caerleon Electricals) who is giving up his time and persuading the local suppliers to provide the materials.
We will keep you up to date with developments and include some photos when we have them.
A request to any Africampers from 2005, 2006 and 2007!!!!
We are going to try to raise the funds to do the rewiring. We have qualified electricians who have volunteered to give their time and supply materials – we just need to raise funds to fly them over and feed them for the duration of their stay. We estimate that if we have 10 volunteers who are prepared to bag-pack on two separate days, we can raise the money in a weekend. If you are willing to volunteer your time to help, please let Andy know and we’ll get back to you with a date!
Thank you!
